"How Hope for Youth Changed My Path"
Overcoming Challenges in the Fifth Ward: A Journey of Growth
Growing up in the Fifth Ward of Houston, Texas, presented numerous challenges and obstacles. With an alcoholic father, domestic violence was a constant presence in my life. While these circumstances deeply impacted me, I want to focus on the aspects of my life that I could control, particularly peer pressure. As the youngest of seven boys, peer pressure was something I faced on a daily basis, and it wasn’t easy.
The Struggle with Peer Pressure
Throughout my childhood, I gave in to peer pressure in an attempt to fit in or simply to have fun. However, this behavior soon spiraled into an addictive and destructive habit that began to consume my life. Breaking free from this cycle was difficult, but the turning point came when I made the decision to leave behind tempting environments and instead surround myself with more positive influences. It was a tough journey, but it was through engaging in productive activities, like Hope for Youth, that I found the strength to move forward.
Discovering Hope for Youth
I first learned about Hope for Youth through Webb Crunk, who started as a mentor to my brothers. Webb would often take them to Hope for Youth, and though I was too young to join at the time, I would cry each time they left. Webb always made sure to bring me something back, like toys or a juice box, to ease the disappointment. Then, on my birthday, he called to invite me to Jesus N The Hood. It was there that I found the support I had been missing—fellow peers and adults who truly cared about my well-being.
Building Relationships and Gaining Support
At Hope for Youth, I developed close relationships with some incredible adults, including Scott Brown, Chad Smith, Nathael Inca, and Webb Crunk. These mentors played a crucial role in my life, offering guidance and support that helped me stay focused. They would pick me up for events, and the welcoming, fun atmosphere of Hope for Youth made it a place where I could escape from negative influences and start focusing on positive activities. I initially thought it was just a place to do cool things for free, but over time, I realized it was shaping me into the person I wanted to become.
Finding Purpose and Direction
Through Hope for Youth, I began to make better choices. Instead of returning to negative environments, I filled my time with college preparation, getting involved at church, and calling up Webb to come pick me up for events. Hope for Youth taught me valuable lessons on leadership, goal-setting, and, most importantly, how to cope with peer pressure.
The Positive Side of Peer Pressure
While peer pressure can be damaging, I’ve learned that it can also guide you toward positive changes. The influence of both negative and positive peers has given me clarity and a sense of direction. However, Hope for Youth has been instrumental in helping me create my own path. It has empowered me to stand apart from the crowd, be true to myself, and forge my own future.
Becoming a Leader
Hope for Youth not only taught me how to cope with peer pressure but also how to be an effective leader. I now approach situations with confidence and am able to turn down negative influences without hesitation. One quote that has resonated with me throughout my journey is, “Only dead fish swim with the stream.” I once was like the dead fish, going with the flow of peer pressure, but through Hope for Youth, I have come to life in ways I never thought possible.
